A short Introduction to the BAUBIOLOGIE

A GUIDE FOR ADEQUATE LIVING CONDITIONS

A. THE CURRENT DESASTROUS ENVIRONMENTAL SITUATION AND THE SYNDROM OF THE SICK BUILDING

Climate change and global warming, whose causes are the excessive increase in "type greenhouse" gas is already a reality. Almost half of these emissions are produced directly by the construction and use of buildings, and this is where comes the responsibility of the technical construction to not contribute to this unsustainable development and not continue to pollute on behalf of the architecture. Saving and sustainable use of natural resources are crucial to the future of the planet.

Modern cities are growing from speculative, criteria for non-renewable energy sources including anti-ecológicos materials. The result is that in large cities with an inhumane intensification, unbearable pollution and increasingly more diseases.

B. BIOCONSTRUCTION: BACK TO THE COMMON SENSE

The Bioconstrucción means the house as a harmonious dynamic ecosystem and balance, which in the past and in other cultures was an natural and logical focus. There was no need for a special name for all the construction that was organic, made with natural materials and by taking advantage of the place and the climate.  The further progress of the Bioconstrucción have become in countries of german-speaking, where there was born of the concern by chemical pollution produced by the synthetic materials. Here is the topic of the sick building syndrome.  Parallel to the increase in diseases and the increase of fatalitys, the movement grew and there was founded in 1976 the "Institut für Baubiologie" (bioconstrucción Institute) in Bavaria, Germany, dealing to all aspects of the bioconstrucción, present both the research aspect of disclosure.

ARCHITECTURAL AND URBANSTIC GUIDELINES

1. PERSONS IN FACILITY

Currently housing market system is just as opposed to what should be, by placing the person as a passive consumer whose needs are not taken into account. Architecture is not an autonomous entity but appears built into the system and must be people-oriented. Buy decent housing is an essential right for all. Housing should not be deregulated by a financial market, nor the soil. Urban planning must be more social with a concept more inclusive. People should not be the victims of land speculation. Social, solidarity and fair initiatives should favour to facilitate housing for everyone, even the poorest. The buildings are executed for individuals and so can live pleasantly. We must make an architecture for the soul, with qualities of colors, aromas and textures on surfaces, in a building that favours the in-house expertise, which is not only functional but nourishment our feelings and cultivates our creativity. Self-building-houses, including in the framework of cooperatives or ecoaldeas neighbourhood exchanges can help experience the deep sense of home and find a healthy balance between social, economic and environmental movement.

2. RESPECT THE CONSTRUCTION SITE

The building with his inhabitants, the property and the local climate are always unique. One should always incorporate with the choice of the construction site the topography, view, the plantation, the earth state, the water and the geobiological composition in the building form. The flora and fauna should be minimum with the earth movements.

The local values with his culture should be a component of the considerations of a building. Today we can live pleasantly in the country. Everybody must not live in big conurbations and use in addition only the weekend to see the environs like a leisure park, to consume the nature, without some relation to each other. We can found apartment-sharing communities which are integrated into the environment, for young families or people who have still created no big financial savings. We are for the practise of a "quiet culture" instead of a culture of the buying and throwing, a short-lived fashion culture which is aimed only on the quick consumption. A good design of a building needs his time and its like an puzzle to satisfy of the future owners. Thus we can prevent infertile prototypes of buildings with a dull design, (that we can see in many architecture competitions).

3. CLIMATE AND ORIENTATION

The climate factor determines the orientation and the form that we build. Each climate creates a specific form of construction, and thus arises in the popular architecture worldwide. The modern movements in the international architecture generally do not observe this factor and that's why equal buildings are designed in the cities of the north, south, this and west, with an enormous maintenance cost for refrigeration and warming.

4. HARMONIOUS DESIGN

The design is realized in harmonic proportions, based on the golden-section, and with the exhaustive study of the suitable colors. After materialistic values and angular designs it is necessary to express more sensitive forms, in constructions that should join the deep being of the persons and should syntonize with the nature of perpetual form, as we see in the Organic Architecture, which is already a living tradition for many years. The organic architecture is born of the real nature and understands the persons like spiritual beings. Both are a starting point and inspiration source for the design.

5. SAVING OF ENERGY AND WATER

Earlier it was constructed by the beginning of the force of the gravity, with walls of load that were therefore very thick and heavy. This had as a result that were providing an acoustic isolation and a very favorable thermal inertia, while in the current construction systems there has got lost this quality of the surrounding one of the buildings. In the bioconstruction, nevertheless, we recapture this so important aspect.
The buildings are designed with an ideal thermal isolation, suitable systems of heating, with a high percentage of radiation, household appliances of low consumption and sanitary devices of water saving.
The standard for housings of expense of energy for the heating must be less than 30 kwh/m2 per year. Also zero is possible to create energy buildings or even positive energy.
There is favored the indigenous abundant vegetation of every area close to the buildings, which only needs a very sporadic night irrigation.

6. USE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY.

In the traditional architecture there have always been born in mind of the sun, the wind and the water with the intuitive use of these natural and renewable energy resources.
We commemorate this knowledge and use the active solar energy, for example in photovoltaic systems and solar collectors, and of passive form in glazing on the south. Also the wind, hydraulic power is used and geotermic – always in decentralized systems, never in big scales.

7. MATERIALS OF CONSTRUCTION

The election of the building materials is essential for the well-being of the inhabitants and for the balance of the environment. We understand the closings of a building as our third skin (after the corporal skin and the clothes).
It is necessary to exile completely the use of poisonous materials, both in his production, and in his installation not either for the future users. In bioconstruction there are applied not pollutant and renewable products produced with low social, environmental and energy costs, biodegradable or easily re-usable or recycable costs. There are not used materials that accumulate static electricity, which the positive ions of the air increase, as most of the synthetics do it. There are not used elements that prevent the transpiration, closing hermetically the treated surfaces, but materials are used higroscópicos. Materials of the area are used, supporting the local small scale industries economy and avoiding important transports.

8. SENSIBLE INSTALLATIONS

In the facilities they look for simple, economic, perpetual systems, which do not become exhausted and which allow the maximum decentralization, looking for a maximum self-sufficiency.
We use heaters or complementary cauldrons of biomass and radiant walls, dry toilets type “clivus multrum”, natural waste water treatment with marshy plants and cisterns for the use of rain waters.
